(De)Motivation

Ask Megan, if you have to. I love to start projects and don't exactly finish them all. I guess it could be considered a bad habit, but I think of it more as trying things out… testing the water. I guess in some respect I'm like a little kid: Once I play with something long enough it loses its luster and I'll gladly move on to the next shiny new toy that comes around. Crocheting just wasn't my thing. I've been slacking off with CFMenuCal, but I won't be letting that one get left by the wayside. I'll force myself to finish it, if I have to. I'm stuck on a feature that I consider important, but it's not very exciting to work on. I get ideas for different things to add all the time, but I force myself to just write the idea down and not work on it, because I want to make the important progress before playing with flashy fun features. Then there are ideas like Finding a Dive Bar That Doesn't Suck, which never got off the ground because as much as I like a cold beer on a hot day, we just don't drink like we used to. These days, going out to a bar is somewhere between a special occasion and going out to eat, which we don't do very often. I don't think that one has much hope of getting finished. Last night I finally bought the RAM upgrade that my laptop so desperately needs, and the proprietary cable I need in order to attach my LCD monitor and get some more desktop space. Then I took an old desktop computer I was trying to build into a KnoppMyth box back in the days of analog TV and installed Ubuntu, Samba, and FTP, and it's going to be our home file server. Eventually I'll be buying a large-ish hard drive to put in it, and then it will be the perfect place to store all of our pictures and music. But for now, it serves as a perfect distraction, keeping me from working on a number of other half-finished projects.

Working for the weekend

I did it! I posted every day this week! I'm well on my way to getting you used to this regular posting thing again only to disappoint you once again! It's been a geektastic week… I got some amazing stuff done on my program; but I'll spare you the details because I know most of you would run for the hills if I were to start speaking geek. During my train ride into the city for my Doctor appointment on Wednesday I was able to finish going through and editing our Memorial Day Weekend pictures, and you can probably expect to see them soon. But not today, because I spent the entire evening yesterday geeking out, and haven't uploaded them yet. Sorry. I'm so excited for this weekend. A bunch of my Fraternity brothers are coming up for a few nights and we're going to do some good old fashion grilling, golfing, and beering. If the past is any indication, I should get a bunch of great pictures. We couldn't have asked for better weather, either! So beer me that beer, and tell me about your weekend plans. Maybe it will help Friday go by faster for both of us!

Excuses, excuses

When life gives you lemons, — no wait, that's not it. When you fall off the wagon horse, — no, that's not it either. What I'm trying to say, if you haven't figured it out yet, is whoops/sorry. Being an internet celebrity is hard work. It's like a second job. Some days I'm taking a shower or sitting on the throne when I'm struck with a really great idea for a post, but unfortunately I don't keep a pen and paper with me in the shower. Not to fret – my guess is that most of them would fall into the "it sounded better in my head" category. The fact of the matter is that I had one hell of a week! Saturday I got more exercise and sun exposure than I normally budget for an entire week, Sunday (Mum's Day) I ended up working for almost 11 hours, and then Monday through Wednesday I was up to my neck in meetings discussing how to fix the customer website code that broke with the latest software upgrade… and then fixing it. Thursday I started work far too early for the purpose of deploying more new code, and by 11:00 I had hit 40 hours for the week. Somewhere during that work-induced coma I managed to go tree hunting with Megan (elusive buggers, ar'n 'ay?) and pick out some green stuff to replace some other green stuff in our back yard. (I'm sure this is all just a conspiracy to keep me outside.) I took the second half of Thursday and all of Friday off and mostly just worked on my florescent skin-tone and rebuilding the callus on my buttocks. If you're a nerd, and I know some of you are, you may appreciate this: I started writing a program (a website, really) that will plan out your entire month's dinner menu based on your recipe book. In doing so, I successfully avoided doing any of the dishes collecting on the counter in the meantime. The goal is to have the program save us a bunch of time, thereby creating more time to do things like the dishes. If that doesn't qualify me for BS excuse of the year, nothing will.
